San Jose Mercury News trashed the infamous "demon sheep" web video produced by Carly Fiorina's campaign.

Hounded by rumors of coordination, Tom Campbell denied any deals were made between himself and Meg Whitman.

Carly Fiorina suggested bankruptcy be on the table to deal with the state's financial mess. In reality, however, states cannot seek bankruptcy protection.

Right-wing publication, The American Spectator, attacked Campbell and his "anti-Israel" voting record.

It appears Carly Fiorina believes we are living in 1994 because she offered a series of "reforms" that were implemented fifteen years ago.

California Accountability Project, a product of the Democratic Governors Association, launched. Other groups formed separate committees to boost Jerry Brown and other candidates in the state.

Huffington Post and New West writer William Bradley examined the "machinations of Meg Whitman" on her campaign's efforts at intimidation of other candidates and bogus claims on how long she's lived in California.

Jeff Denham leads Richard Pombo, according to the former's internal polls, by a margin of 28-12, and 38-12 when voters are informed that outgoing Congressman George Radanovich endorsed Denham. A pollster for Denham says their data shows Pombo is bad for the party.

The looming battle over AB 32 makes the state a prime target for the next climate fight. Read more on AB 32 from the state's former controller, Steve Westly.

Carly Fiorina defended and promised more of the wildly popular (and widely-mocked) "demon sheep" advertisements.

In a video released on the web, Meg Whitman received flack from the conservative base for disavowing a supporter that said they were a "proud racist." Whitman released a television ad that begins airing today.

Fresno Bee: Steve Poizner backed a voter initiative that led to $40 billion in more taxes.

A new poll showed Gavin Newsom leading the field of Democrats -- Janice Hahn and Dean Florez -- for lieutenant governor. Newsom "shot down" such a run a month ago but the San Francisco Chronicle believes the San Francisco mayor ain't out yet.

Jackie Speier ruled out running for the state's top cop job. Kamala Harris raised $1 million in the last six months but Chris Kelly leads the field in cash-on-hand, while Republican Steve Cooley is getting hammered by conservative activists.

Republicans collectively raised several hundred thousand to unseat Jerry McNerney in CA-11 while most lent themselves a huge chunk of their campaign cash.

Richard Pombo raised $260,000 campaigning for a return bid to Congress in CA-19.

San Ramon Mayor Abram Wilson (R) outraised the AD-15 Democratic incumbent, Joan Buchanan.

Los Angeles Times noted Carly Fiorina's flat-lined fundraising operation and her $2.5 million loan to nowhere:

Fiorina noted that she raised more than $1 million in November and December, despite the dormant period around the holidays. But critics point out that without her loan, Fiorina would have had only $158,000 after debts at the filing deadline. That would have put her only slightly ahead of DeVore.

Steve Poizner, far behind in the polls for governor, says polls don't matter. Calitics points out that there's some truth to a statement like that but Poizner must raise his numbers before it is too late. The departure of Campbell from the race may be his only shot to win.

Tom McClintock, the standard-bearer for carpetbagging, will endorse Richard Pombo for Congress in the 19th District.

Abram Wilson, San Ramon mayor and candidate for State Assembly, says the city "will have to do more with less."

Proposition 8 witness, Harvard professor Nancy Cott, says marriage is not defined by procreation. An impassioned plaintiff testifies to his love for his partner and pleaded to be treated like anyone else. The Supreme Court halted, for two days at least, a judge's plan to post trial footage to YouTube just an hour before the trial began on Tuesday.

Gas prices in the Bay Area jumped and analysts believe $4 a gallon this summer could be a reality at this rate.

Speaking of transportation, dozens of Californian bridges may be faced with the same eyebar issue that closed the Bay Bridge late last year.

San Francisco 49ers stadium plan heads to the ballot in Santa Clara while the Fremont City Council present a new plan to bring the Oakland Athletics to Fremont.

Jermain Taylor pulled out of the Super Six boxing tournament after suffering a bruising knockout to Arthur Abraham in Germany. Taylor was expected to fight Oakland's Andre Ward on April 17. Ward defeated Mikkel Kessler for the WBA middleweight championship last November in Oakland.

Democratic Governor's Association launched an independent-expenditure campaign in California.

Steve Cooley, Republican district attorney in Los Angeles, formed an exploratory committee for the state's attorney general.

Carpetbagger switch: Larry Pegram dropped out of the 11th Congressional District campaign and backed David Harmer, who said Republican leaders reached out to him about running.

It was Elizabeth Emken's turn for a Manteca Bulletin puff piece.

In the nearby 19th Congressional District, Richard Pombo seeks a return to Congress. In an editorial, the Los Angeles Times says, "this is a comeback we don't need."

It's the other things we know about Pombo -- that he's rabidly anti-environment, ethically challenged, overly eager to hand public resources to private corporations -- that worry us and were among the reasons a Democratic challenger was able to oust the seven-term Republican from his reliably GOP seat in 2006. Endorsement season hasn't started yet, but we don't need a campaign to know that Pombo would not contribute anything useful if he rejoined the House of Representatives.

FDL provided steady coverage of the Proposition 8 trial's first day.

CA-19: Denham’s Weekend Ruined

Posted on January 9, 2010

These are a pair of headlines that likely ruined the weekend for Jeff Denham, Republican hopeful for outgoing Rep. George Radanovich's seat in Congress, regarding the support of Kevin McCarthy, a Republican member from Bakersfield.

Thursday: "McCarthy 'Likes' Pombo, But Sticks with Denham Endorsement"

Nunes' release then included a quote from McCarthy in which McCarthy said, "I was not aware of Richard's candidacy when I made my initial endorsement."

"Richard has a long history of being a strong leader and fighter for ag and water in our state," McCarthy continued.

However McCarthy told CQ-Roll Call he was not backtracking from his initial choice. "I endorsed Denham. I'm not backing away from my endorsement of Denham," he said.

But, he added, "I like Pombo, as well."'

Saturday: "McCarthy Changes Mind, Backs Pombo"

“Although I originally endorsed my good friend Jeff Denham immediately upon his announcement that he would run, I have now had time to re-assess that decision with the knowledge of Pombo’s availability,” McCarthy said in a statement released this afternoon.

McCarthy's re-election campaign this year cannot use the phrase "decisive leadership" to describe him. To their credit, they don't. Ironically, he serves in the House Republican leadership as the deputy whip. The Republican caucus sure does know how to pick the good ones...
